I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! And hopefully SANE! I'm going a bit store crazy… And I know it always helps me to shake up my creativity. So I thought it'd be fun to share one of the lessons from my Pop Manga Drawing book – FREE! Right here! So get scrolling and start drawing!

If you have the book already – start following along on page 62! If you enjoy drawing and like the lesson below, you can get you own copy of the book here on my Etsy Store.

STEP 1: For this piece, you're going to draw a full circle (even though half of the face will be covered up by hair) using a hard lead like an HB or by gently drawing so that you don't press too hard. It's important to have the proper shape and structure of all objects no matter if you see them or not!

STEP 2: Use light lines to add details to your character. Don't press too hard, okay? The trick here is to establish the hair first and then fit in the sun buddies after. So, don't be afraid to draw over your initial circle shapes.

STEP 3: Refine the elements of your drawing either by switching to a softer 3B lead or by adding a little bit more pressure to your current pencil. You want to focus on the ebb and flow of the hair. Using confident strokes, try to maintain a continuous line, breaking only when you get to a juncture. I start at the bangs and then move down to the rest of the hair.

STEP 4: Erase your underwriting with a soft eraser. It's okay to erase some of the outlines you've established. Bows your Cuba ce yo correct and redraw parts!

STEP 5: Work on one object at a time. I chose to focus on the girls eyes as well as her bear ears. Use quick little strokes to simulate the fur. Shade in her eyes moving from top to middle. Drawing the eyes and ears will require several layers of shading and texture.

STEP 6: Refine the suns. I chose to draw the suns before the hair because the suns overlap the hair. As a result, it's best to establish them first. Use a softer 4B lead to achieve darker lines and gently go over your outline. Thicken the lines that connect at the main subject to provide more definition. Give each sun a little face to add some personality.

STEP 7: Now, jump into the hair! For this stage of the drawing, turn your paper around as you draw to get nice, fluid lines. Start with light, subtle lines to get a feeling for the hair. Then, as you get confident, firm up you pressure and draw in more stands of hair. For stylistic purposes, I like to add more hair at the edges and leave less of it in the middle.

STEP 8: Using a softer 4B lead, finish up the eyes, the ears, and the hair. Remember; it's totally okay to draw over the lines placed earlier. Doing so just adds more texture and depth. For the eyes, make sure to darken the tips of the irises so that she doesn't have a startled look. Slowly build up shadows. Start with light pressure, and then turn your paper and draw over that area again with former pressure. Repeat this process several times until you get a nice shadow layer.

FINISHING UP: Go over your drawing and add in darker edges and lines. Clean up any leftover underdrawing and add little wisps of hair here and there.

I hope you had fun! Make sure you share you work when you're done on any social platform. Be sure to tag me so that I can see your masterpieces!
